Q: What size rims/tires could fit on a stock 1998 ford ranger?
I just got a 1998 ford ranger (with no lifts or suspension work) and i am trying to find out what the biggest size rim/tire i could fit on it without rubbing. If u could help me out it would be great.
2WD!!!!!!!!!!!
now with a 3 inch body lift
A: I would imagine you have 15" wheels, I would go with 225 70 16. You could also use 16" wheels off the 4WD with 245 75 or 70 16..
Q: My 1998 Ford Ranger just died while I was driving! What could have caused this?
While I was driving my 1998 Ford Ranger died. When I try to start it tries to turn over but doesn't. Also I noticed I have no coolant. What could be the problem??
A: Blown head gasket or cracked head.
Q: 1998 ford ranger break light switch needs replacement?
I have a 1998 ford ranger and all the break lights don't work. It is not a fuse or bulb problem. I'm almost positive it is the break light switch. There are 6 wires that go to the pigtail that connect to the switch. What do each of these wires go to? how do you replace?
A: note location of wires then remove switch and put in new one attaching wires to same locations.
Q: How do you get to the wedge lamp front on a 1998 ford ranger?
I am having difficulty getting access to the burned out bulb inside. It seems like such a confined space, too small to get hands inside. Can someone explain how to reach the bulb?
A: You must be talking about the parking light. The easiest would be remove the whole assembly. There are 2 philip head screws under the light. You will need to remove those and just wiggle it out and you can get as to the bulbs.
Q: How do i go about bleeding out a hydraulic clutch on a 1998 ford ranger?
2wd, 4 cylinder 2.5L, manual transmission. clutch doesn't seem to be slipping but clutch pedal is low to ground. have to pull back on the pedal before pressing it to get it to start or shift into gear sometimes. does this sound like a cylinder problem rather than the entire clutch system problem? could air in the lines be causing this problem as well?
A: Before you bleed a slave cylinder (clutch) or a master cylinder (brakes), you should "gravity" bleed them first.
To do this, make sure the reservoir is full, set the cap on the on the reservoir but do not tighten. Then open the bleeder screw and let gravity push the air out until you have have all fluid coming out. On brakes, do one bleeder at a time, farthest bleeder first.
This is very similar to using a Vacuum bleeder which "sucks" the air out of the bleeder, but I think its less of a mess. I have done it this way for 20 years and it works the best. If done right you dont need anyone to pump the pedal although it doesn't hurt to do that last.
Q: 1998 Ford Ranger Hazzard lights come on when I use left or right turn signal?
I replaces the Hazzard/Signal light switch and flasher module and it is still doing it. Any thoughts??
A: work the switch on the top of the column up and down/put a little wd40 on it down into the switch top
Q: How often does the computer run a system check on a 1998 Ford Ranger?
I bought a part at Auto zone and want to return it if it's not the piece causing the check engine light to come on, but I need to know how many miles I have to drive before the computer will run another check.
A: The PCM checks the system continually. If you've corrected your problem, it will take 15 engine starts or so to cycle the fault code out of memory. If you have a code scanner (or can borrow one from AutoZone, or can convince them to do it for you), you can clear the fault code memory with it immediately. You can also remove the negative battery cable for a couple of minutes . . . but this clears all PCM memory tuning settings as well (not to mention those pesky radio presets and clock), and you will need to drive a mixed city/highway cycle (10-15 miles) to restore them.
Q: what is the recommended octane rating on a 1998 ford ranger?
should i get 87, 89, or 91? do they impact gas mileage or is it just for different combustion ratios on different vehicles?
A: 87 octane is the best fuel for your use. The only ones who need the higher octane fuel are those with the very high performance engines and those who believe the hype that Higher octane is better fuel economy and such baloney as that. Now having said that, IF you have a classic vehicle designed to run on LEADED GASOLINE it is acceptable to use the premium fuel for better horsepower and longer engine life, However, lead additives are actually better for them.
Q: How much will it cost to replace a 1998 ford ranger transmission?
How do you know?
A: You did not say if it was automatic or stick, 2w or 4w drive, etc? But the stick is the most common, and it is the M5OD-R1 transmission made by Mazda, and is easy to find in a salvage yard because it was also used on the Explorer, Bronco and Aerostar. With 2w drive, it would cost probably around $300 and $300 installation. With 4w drive, I would guess more like $400 and $500 installation, depending on availability and region.
Q: I am looking for a drivers side door to a 1998 ford ranger. Is there any compatible alternatives? Explorer?
Just cant find what I am looking for. I was hoping I could use the door from another Ford vehicle.
A: maybe a bronco might fit if you get the same year.
Q: What size door speakers should I get for my 1998 Ford Ranger?
I have the four door extended cab.
A: 6"x8"
Q: How do i replace a 1998 ford ranger blinker light?
It is the front blinker
A: Do you need the whole light, or just a bulb? To replace the bulb, take the screws out of the lens, take the lens off, and twist the bulb 1/4 turn counterclockwise, and pull straight out. It's probably a #1157 bulb. Then, get a new bulb, push it in, minding the position of the litle pins on the bulb, turn clockwise 1/4 turn, replace the lens and screws, and you're good to go.
Q: 4x4 not engaging on 1998 ford ranger?
I have a 1998 Ford Ranger 4x4 and the problem that I have is the 4x4 not engaging. When I switch over to 4high, the light turns on, but doesnt engage. Then, when I switch over to 4low, the truck is in low gear, but its only 2x. I replaced the actuator sensor under the hood, thinking it went bad, but wasnt the problem. What else could be the problem?
A: STOP replacing parts.. Your truck have vacuum pulse system. You may want to check for any leak to the vacuum hoes to the hubs. Those hoes tend to crack and leak. If that is not the cure, then I would check the axle for any leak of vacuum.
If the above doesn't work, then I would remove and check the shift motor. They could get pretty expensive, I have one off my 2000 and both axles and hubs if you are interested.
You can avoid the whole thing but doing the axle swap from 96-current Ford Explorer or Mercury Mountaineer axles ( you will need axles and spindle from the explorer) or from 2001 to current Ford Ranger will work. 1998-2000 are test vacuum system for Ford and doesn't seem to work out for them. I've seen guys swap a kit they can install for manual locking hub as well, but I am not sure how it work. You may want to google it. It is suppose to be cheap and easy too.
If you are interested in the shift motor or the original axles and hub for your truck, leave me a message.
Q: How much does a camper shell cost for a 1998 ford ranger extra cab regular bed?
A: Around 500-900 new. Used prices can vary. I have an older fiberglass one that I can't even get 75 bucks for.
